When do you switch from transitional shoes to winter shoes?

Autumn is a time of changing weather and temperatures, and many parents ask us: When is it actually time to switch from transitional shoes to winter shoes, and are your shoes waterproof?

The short answer is: There is no specific date – but there are good rules of thumb you can follow. And with a few simple tricks you can extend the use of your transitional shoes so that they last all the way into winter - And did you know that it is not always best during the transitional period to have a shoe with a tex membrane?

Extend the season with insoles and socks

Transition shoes are perfect when the temperature is between about +5 and +15 degrees. But if it gets colder, you can extend their lifespan:

  • Put a thermal insole in the shoe to insulate it extra well against the cold.

  • Use a wool insole that both warms and transports moisture away.

  • Combine with warm socks so the child can still play freely without cold toes.

This way, the transitional shoes can often be used a little longer before it's time to find the heavy winter boots.

TEX membrane or not – what's the difference?

Many of our models are available both with and without a TEX membrane , and both are good choices – but in their own way:

👟 Transitional shoes with TEX membrane

  • Has a built-in membrane that provides extra protection against rain, moisture and snow.

  • Good for children who often play in wet grass, on muddy surfaces, in snow or rain.

👟 Transition shoes without TEX membrane

  • Still water-repellent , but more breathable.

  • Perfect for everyday use where the child plays outside, but not necessarily in rain and puddles.

Water-repellent vs. waterproof – when are shoes enough?

This is where confusion often arises:

  • Water-repellent means that the shoes can keep your feet dry in light rain, damp grass and small wet areas.

  • Waterproof means that the shoes can withstand longer periods of direct water – and here rubber boots are the right solution.

🌦️ When do you use what?

  • Transitional shoes: When the weather is cool, lightly rainy, snowy or humid – but the child is not standing directly in puddles for several hours.

  • Rubber boots: When the rain is pouring down, the puddles are tempting, or the ground is soaked.

In short

Transitional shoes are indispensable in both autumn and spring – and with the right soles and socks, they can be used well into winter.
When the temperature really drops and the weather gets wet and cold, people switch to winter shoes. And on really rainy days, rubber boots are still children's best friend.
